Getting to the bottom of monkey impressions.

Why is it that whenever someone does their impression of a monkey or an ape, they always scratch the top of their head. I’ve seen a lot of monkeys in my day and not once have I seen one scratch the top of his/her head. Yet every monkey impressionist insists that this behavior occurs enough to make it a staple in the standard monkey impression! I’ve seen plenty of humans scratch the top of their head, but never a monkey.

I’m willing to guess that way back in the day, some monkey witnessed a human scratching the top of his head and decided to clown that joker and do a human impression to his chimp pals. While he was in the midst of impersonating the human, some other screwball human comes along and sees the monkey’s impression and turns to HIS buds and starts impersonating the MONKEY impersonating a human. The comedy monkey turns just in time to see the new group of humans laughing as some douchebag clowns on HIM for laughs.

It’s gotta suck to be a monkey. :(
